Wish Upon a Card is a silent auction and sale of donated fabric postcards.  Over $17,000 raised from the project in the past two years has been donated to Wendy's Wish Foundation.

The 2009 Wish Upon A Card fundraiser will be a juried silent auction.  High Desert Gallery will donate custom framing for approximately fifty postcards.  Any postcards not selected for the silent auction will be sold at other venues by the Wendy’s Wish volunteers.  The silent auction will begin July 5, during the Around the Block Fiber Arts Stroll and will continue through Quilt Show Day.  The cards will be on display at Sisters Art Works July 1 through July 11.  A group of cards from our Quilters Affair Instructors will be framed and silent auctioned at the high school during the week of classes, July 6 – 10.  Any postcards donated for this special event will be silent auctioned or sold – thank you for your donation!

Postcards must be 4” x 6”.  Please mail your card in an envelope and include your name and address. To be considered for the silent auction, cards must be received by May 15, 2009.  Send cards to SOQS/Wish Project, P.O. Box 280, Sisters, OR  97759.

Wendy’s Wish is a project to support the St. Charles Cancer Treatment Center. Wendy’s Wish exists to provide education, promote early detection of cancer and offer affordable, compassionate emotional support to each individual’s personal journey.  Wendy’s Wish is named in honor of Wendy S. Huntley, a Central Oregon quilter who had breast cancer and ultimately passed away from colon cancer in the summer of 2006.  Direct contributions to Wendy’s Wish may be made to St. Charles Foundation – Wendy’s Wish, 2500 NE Neff Road, Bend, OR  97701

Heritage Theatre Company presents QUILTERS, a Broadway musical that garnered six Tony nominations in 1985 and has remained a favorite in regional theatres ever since.  As homesteader Sarah prepares a legacy quilt for her daughters, a patchwork of stories comes to life inspired by her quilting patterns.  Seven actresses in multiple roles portray scenes ranging from humorous to dramatically intense as the spirit of pioneer women and the historical role of quilting are celebrated in drama, dance and song.

Each scene of the musical features a quilt block, which is actually a wall hanging-sized, finished quilt.  Each of these small quilts have been made by Central Oregon quilters and they will each be priced for sale.  The money raised from the sale, along with proceeds from ticket sales, will be donated to Sisters Family Access Network, an organization supporting families in need here in Sisters.

QUILTERS will be performed on
Tuesday, July 7th at 7:00 pm and Friday, July 10th at 1:00 pm in the Sisters High School Auditorium. Doors open one hour in advance – seating is General Admission. Tickets are $10.00 for students and $15.00 for adults.  To purchase, send a check payable to SOQS and a self-addressed stamped envelope to SOQS/Musical, P.O.Box 280, Sisters, OR  97759.

If you prefer to pay by credit card, please call 541-549-0989.  Sorry, but we’re not able to accept credit card sales over the internet at this time.

The sixteen "Heritage Quilts" below were made for the musical by local quilters who donated their time to design, piece and quilt these fabulous works of art.  Each quilt is featured in a scene in the musical.  The quilts will be available for sale for $250 each.  Proceeds from the sale of these quilts will be donated to local non-profit organizations.  Click on a quilt to see a larger image.

We are proud to announce that the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and Quilters, the Musical have been selected as official Oregon 150 sesquicentennial partners.

High Desert Gallery Thursday, July 9th from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.

This year's gallery artist is Lura Schwarz Smith.  She has been producing textile art for over 30 years. Before that, she was making very bad traditional bed quilts with her first quilting partner, her mother, starting in the 1960s. Originally showing in galleries in the 70s and 80s, for the past years she has been showing quilts and receiving awards at regional, national, and international quilt shows. Several highlights of her career in the quilt world over the past decade are that one of her quilts was named one of the "100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century," and she was included in the "30 Distinguished Quilt Artists of the World" exhibit at the first Tokyo Dome quilt show in 2002.

Clearwater Gallery Saturday, May 23rd, 4:30 - 6:30 PM

Dan Rickards is this year's poster artist.  He has been a professional artist for over 17 years and has won numerous awards for his work.  Most often he uses acrylics and paints with a fine, realistic style, and stunning detail in the area of focus.  Dan and his wife Julia own Clearwater Gallery in Sisters.  They and their four children have lived in Central Oregon for 15 years – drawn to the area by the incredible people and the peaceful atmosphere.

On Quilt Show Day, all ages are welcome to stop by the Quilting Activity Area for an introduction to machine piecing.  Each participant will complete a small take home project or make a block to be contributed to a full size quilt which is donated to our Quilts for Kids charity program.  Our Featured Show Sponsor, Viking Distributors, provides the sewing machines and The Stitchin’ Post, Westminster Fibers and many wonderful individuals have donated the materials. Hours are 10:00 to 2:30 on Quilt Show day.  The Activity Area is located in Town Square, behind Re/Max Realty.  Hope to see you there!

The Quilting Activity Area, previously coordinated by Linda Brunanchon, is seeking a new leader.  The activity area helps to fulfill our mission of “educating & inspiring the public about the art of quilting” and is an extremely popular stop for families attending the show.  If you are interested in volunteering to help with this area, please contact Ann Richardson at 541-549-0989 or Ann@SistersOutdoorQuiltShow.org.

Here are some cute examples of some of the kids quilt projects.

This year’s raffle quilt is an original design from the East of the Cascades Quilt Guild.  We chose to interpret thus year’s theme, “Cascade of Color” using a traditional Kaleidoscope block in a contemporary color scheme.  The palette is inspired by our state flower, the Oregon Grape, found throughout the Cascades and climbing its way up the side of our quilt.  Members of the East of the Cascades Quilters took on the piecing and assembled the top as one of their many contributions to the show.

Proceeds from the raffle support
Sisters Quilt Show™, a non-profit organization benefiting the school and community groups of Sisters and Central Oregon.  Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.  The quilt will be on display at The Stitchin’ Post during Quilt Show week and the winning ticket will be drawn at 4:00 pm on Quilt Show Day, on the lawn behind The Stitchin’ Post.  Winner need not be present to win the quilt.

Please send ticket requests to:

The High Desert Museum , Patterns from the Past: 19th Century American Quilts, June 6 through August 5, 2009 features quilts representative of styles from as long ago as the Revolutionary War era. The collection showcases a spectrum of historical quilting styles and techniques representing the era from the Revolution to the Civil War.  The styles include an early American Union quilt, a laurel album quilt, a basket crib quilt, a broken dishes quilt, a log cabin variation quilt and a mill wheel quilt. The exhibit allows visitors to gain insight into the workmanship and innumerable patterns employed in these beautiful artifacts.

The collection of 22 quilts belongs to the Benton County Historical Society.  In 1956, Susan Lewis Cockrell donated the quilts to the Horner Museum in Corvallis, which closed in 1995. She donated them in honor of her mother, Elizabeth Saville Lewis, whose simple wish was that a “museum in the West” would study and enjoy them.
