 Featured Quilter

Each year the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show invites a local quilter to be “Queen for a Day”.  In selecting the Featured Quilter we look for someone who has dedicated themselves not only to quilting, but also to inspiring others.  We display the quilts of our Featured Quilter in a special location on Quilt Show Day and invite our Featured Quilter to preview their work during the Around the Block Fiber Art Stroll.  Our Featured Quilter for the 2012 show is Cathy Moen of Sisters, Oregon.

Cathy says, "I always enjoyed sewing for our children and our home for years but had never quilted until I took my first class in Seattle just months before my husband and I moved to Sisters in 1998. While he was enjoying ranch life with our 4 draft horses, I decided to take a beginning class at the Stitchin’ Post.  I loved it so much, that I started working at the store and of course was continually inspired with the creative people around me and with every new shipment of fabric that arrived.  I have a BS degree in art which probably has helped give me a basic knowledge of working with colors and designs.  Over the last 12 years, I have gone from traditional blocks to more creative pieces thanks to all that I have learned from Jean and other teachers."

 Machine Quilter Showcase

The annual Machine Quilter Showcase features the work of a talented Central Oregon quilter.  The surface design is often the finishing touch that makes a quilt sing.  More and more, that finishing touch is done by a professional quilter.  The purpose of the Showcase is to highlight and honor the work of one of our gifted quilters each year.  Their work is truly inspiring!

Helen Brisson of Bend, Oregon will be featured in the 2012 Machine Quilter Showcase. Helen says, "I was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas into a family of craftsmen, from dressmakers to painters, woodworkers and quilters.  I learned to sew at an early age with a hand cranked children’s sewing machine, and scraps of silk from our family business, casket
making. To this day I wish I still had the toy sewing machine
to remind me of how far I have come.

In the early 80’s when quilting was making a comeback in the Midwest, I was immersed in completing my first sampler quilt, all by hand when my sister gave me a drawing class with Harry Fredman, a nationally known illustrator. He inspired me to leave the unfinished sampler quilt behind and pursue a career in Graphic Design.

While my art background is an influence in my work, I consider all media for inspiration and techniques to use in my creations.  I find great joy in being able to translate my designs into fabric and the longarm’s quilting area of 22” by almost 12 feet is pure heaven!  My instinct is to use the longarm as an extension of my artwork, drawing with the thread to enhance the fabric, making the thread speak.

I feel honored to have been chosen to show my work at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, there are so many talented machine quilters in this area and to be among them is truly a blessing."

 Inspirational Instructor

This annual exhibit honors an instructor who has dedicated herself (or himself!) to teaching and inspiring others on their quilting journey.
Jackie Erickson of Sisters, Oregon will be honored as our 2012 Inspirational Instructor.
