your creativity. We are accepting quilts of original design,
based on a star block or star theme for this year’s contest.

80”
·

2009 Theme Contest Winners
The Power of Red
|

First Place
by Jan Hearn |

Second Place
by Lizzie Affonso |
It is unusual for me to use large quantities of red
in my quilt projects. The theme challenge "The Power of Red"
was quite a challenge. The influence of watching Dancing With The
Stars must have encouraged my choice of the flamenco dancer for the
design. The flamenco dance is filled with passion, color, and power.
Flamenco Ole reflects the passion, the power with use of ruffles,
the color of red, and beading. Ole! I also used several new
techniques in this quilt by using lots of solid color fabric, face
painting, and using a facing rather than binding to finish the quilt
edges. Theme challenges encourage me to learn and use new color,
techniques, and ideas.

2010 Featured Quilter
& Gallery Artist
 |
Each year the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show
invites a local quilter to be “Queen for a Day”. In selecting the Featured
Quilter we look for someone who has dedicated themselves not only to quilting,
but also to inspiring others. We display the quilts of our Featured Quilter in
a special location on Quilt Show Day and invite our Featured Quilter to preview
their work during the Around the Block Fiber
Art Stroll.
In 2010, Jean Wells Keenan, show founder, author, shop owner and quilting
inspiration to thousands, will be inducted into the
Quilters
Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana. In honor of her work and her influence on
the quilting world, we’ve asked Jean to be our Featured Quilter for our 35th
Anniversary. The show theme “Inspired Journey” highlights the evolution of
quilting over the last three decades and the progression of Jean’s own work.
Jean says, "My life
has been an "Inspired Journey" when it comes to quilting. As a nine year old I
discovered sewing and embroidery and this began my love affair with the
creativity involved in sewing, quilting, and knitting. I have been fortunate to
have turned these interests into a career of teaching and lecturing, writing
books, and owning a retail store. The journey is never ending for me.
Recurring themes in my quilts have to do with natural configurations --- rocks,
trees, flowers, and the landscape. These are a common thread running through my
mind as I work intuitively designing quilts letting the design take on a shape
and color all its own. My fascination is with line, pattern, color, and texture
and how to design with these elements in mind."
Jean will have her first ever
gallery showing at High Desert Gallery in Sisters
during the 2010 show and will have her quilts featured on the annual Quilt Show
poster.
Jean is also being featured in a
special exhibit at
The
Latimer Quilt &
Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon in January-February. Click for

Machine Quilter Showcase

Click for a larger image. |
The
annual Machine Quilter Showcase features the work of a talented
Central Oregon quilter. The surface design is often the
finishing touch that makes a quilt sing. More and more, that
finishing touch is done by a professional quilter. The purpose
of the Showcase is to highlight and honor the work of one of our
gifted quilters each year. Their work is truly inspiring!
This year's machine quilter is Betty Anne Guadalupe from
Prineville, Oregon.
Betty
says, "I began my life as a quilter at a very early age. Both my
mother and grandmother were experts in all forms of the needle
arts. The first time I made a quilt I discovered the many
possibilities of color combinations and I was hooked. It fed my
soul. I was even more excited since I won a second place award
and it was my very first quilt. Over the years since then I have
pursued my art expression in the various forms of quilting, from
piecing and design to appliqué and quilts sewn completely by
hand as my grandmother had taught me. Recently I have extended
myself to the art of long arm quilting and established a
business, Guadalupe Designs. My career as a quilter/long arm
quilter has not only enable me to express the beauty of color
which inspired me long ago, but also to help other quilters
express themselves. I have been both student and teacher as I
have attended many quilting classes and have also taught them. I
have been blessed throughout the years to have won awards for my
quilts and quilting but more than that I have been blessed by
the many friendships that have been formed from belonging to the
circle of quilters worldwide.
