2010 Theme Contest: "Stars Over Sisters"

What’s not to like about a star quilt? There are probably as many interpretations of this theme as there are stars in the sky – and we’re not going to limit your creativity.  We are accepting quilts of original design, based on a star block or star theme for this year’s contest.  Prizes totaling $1,100 will be awarded.  Contest quilts may be entered for sale – the show retains a 25% commission on quilts that are sold.

To be considered for the contest prizes:

·        Finished quilt must be at least 36” x 36” and no more than 80” x 80”

·        Entries must conform to the contest theme and be an original design

·        Quilts must have been made within the last year.

·        Only one entry per person please

·        Entries are judged on execution of the theme, originality, overall design, appearance and workmanship

Registration materials to enter a quilt in the contest will be available after February 1. You can download the Quilt Entry Brochure here when it becomes available.

2010 Featured Quilter & Gallery Artist

Each year the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show invites a local quilter to be “Queen for a Day”.  In selecting the Featured Quilter we look for someone who has dedicated themselves not only to quilting, but also to inspiring others.  We display the quilts of our Featured Quilter in a special location on Quilt Show Day and invite our Featured Quilter to preview their work during the Around the Block Fiber Art Stroll.

In 2010, Jean Wells Keenan, show founder, author, shop owner and quilting inspiration to thousands, will be inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana. In honor of her work and her influence on the quilting world, we’ve asked Jean to be our Featured Quilter for our 35th Anniversary.  The show theme “Inspired Journey” highlights the evolution of quilting over the last three decades and the progression of Jean’s own work.

Jean says, "
My life has been an "Inspired Journey" when it comes to quilting. As a nine year old I discovered sewing and embroidery and this began my love affair with the creativity involved in sewing, quilting, and knitting. I have been fortunate to have turned these interests into a career of teaching and lecturing, writing books, and owning a retail store. The journey is never ending for me.

Recurring themes in my quilts have to do with natural configurations --- rocks, trees, flowers, and the landscape. These are a common thread running through my mind as I work intuitively designing quilts letting the design take on a shape and color all its own. My fascination is with line, pattern, color, and texture and how to design with these elements in mind."

Jean will have her first ever gallery showing at High Desert Gallery in Sisters during the 2010 show and will have her quilts featured on the annual Quilt Show poster.

Jean is also being featured in a special exhibit at The Latimer Quilt & Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon in January-February.  Click for more details click here.

Machine Quilter Showcase

Click for a larger image.

The annual Machine Quilter Showcase features the work of a talented Central Oregon quilter.  The surface design is often the finishing touch that makes a quilt sing.  More and more, that finishing touch is done by a professional quilter.  The purpose of the Showcase is to highlight and honor the work of one of our gifted quilters each year.  Their work is truly inspiring! This year's machine quilter is Betty Anne Guadalupe from Prineville, Oregon.

Betty says, "I began my life as a quilter at a very early age. Both my mother and grandmother were experts in all forms of the needle arts. The first time I made a quilt I discovered the many possibilities of color combinations and I was hooked. It fed my soul. I was even more excited since I won a second place award and it was my very first quilt. Over the years since then I have pursued my art expression in the various forms of quilting, from piecing and design to appliqué and quilts sewn completely by hand as my grandmother had taught me. Recently I have extended myself to the art of long arm quilting and established a business, Guadalupe Designs. My career as a quilter/long arm quilter has not only enable me to express the beauty of color which inspired me long ago, but also to help other quilters express themselves. I have been both student and teacher as I have attended many quilting classes and have also taught them. I have been blessed throughout the years to have won awards for my quilts and quilting but more than that I have been blessed by the many friendships that have been formed from belonging to the circle of quilters worldwide.                    '

Inspirational Instructor

This annual exhibit honors an instructor who has dedicated herself (or himself!) to teaching and inspiring others on their quilting journey.  The exhibit this year will feature the work of Joanne Myers of Bend, Oregon.  To learn more about Joanne and her work click here.

The Next Generation of
Quilting Exhibit

The Next Generation quilts will be on display in a special location set aside just for the younger folks.  Visitors truly enjoy seeing what the ‘next generation’ is creating!  The Next Gen quilts are an annual “Special Exhibit” which means we’ll be publicizing them as a featured location for visitors to the show.  The quilts on display in this exhibit will be from quilters up to the age of 18.  To be included in the exhibit, quilts must be made by the entrant, but can be quilted by someone else.  The quilts must be at least 36” x 36” and not more than 80” x 80”.  Only one entry per person please.

To request registration materials to enter a quilt in this exhibit, please check back here after January 1 for the Quilt Entry Brochure.

Quilters Affair Instructor Special Exhibits

Each year the Quilt Show hosts a special exhibit of quilts from one or more of the world-class instructors from the Stitchin’ Post’s Quilters Affair classes.  This year we are honored to display a special group of quilts from Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.  Both Alex and Ricky will be doing several lectures during Quilters Affair, the Stitchin’ Posts week of classes that precede Quilt Show.  Alex is the commentator for our Special 35th Anniversary Retrospective at the Friday night Picnic in the Park (more info on their lectures and the picnic at http://www.stitchinpost.com/QA_events.html)

Alex and Ricky host fully produced web "TV" show that features great instruction as well as entertaining segments providing insights into the lifestyles of well-known quilt personalities. The show is the first quilting show series to be shot in front of a live audience.  Alex Anderson, former host of HGTV's Simply Quilts and Ricky Tims, quilt teacher, author, and performing artist/entertainer, combine their comprehensive skills to bring to the world wide web the richest, most diverse website for quilters ever created.  You can visit their website at www.thequiltshow.com.
